Gilbert BOURDET is the professor and supervisor of PhD students in Laboratoire d'Optique Appliquée de l'Ecole Polytechnique (LULI), France. He received his Optics engineer degree from Ecole Supérieure d'Optique Théorique et Appliquée, Orsay, France in 1968, and quantum optics DEA in 1974 and Diplôme d’Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (特许任教资格) in 1988. Since 1970, he started researches on absolute distance measurements using fractional excess technique with multi wavelength CO2 laser. He developed CO2 lasers suitable for the application of efficient compact sealed off laser with a good spatial and spectral quality. Since 1974, He started researches on active and adaptive optics. Taking advantage of the experience, he contributes to the introduction of such techniques in astronomy. After 1981, he devoted to molecular lasers: medium power CW lasers with good spatial and spectral quality compatible with heterodyne detection and heterodyne interferometry. He developed conventional and waveguide wavelength tunable CO2 laser with CW or radio frequency discharges and he experienced several applications of such lasers. In 1985, he started studies of optically pumped NH3 lasers emitting at 12 μm and frequency tunable by Stark effect and amplitude modulation of CO2 laser light by NH3 absorption detuned by Stark effect. In 1989, he started a theoretical and experimental study of pulsed Nd:YAG laser with frequency control by a CW single mode master oscillator and spatial mode control with a phase conjugated mirror. In 1995, he started a work on coherent array of microchip diode pumped solid state laser in the safe eye region at 2 µm using Tm doped and Tm;Ho codoped materials. From 2000 to now, he has been focusing his work on diode pumped solid state lasers in LULI where he work on the development of high average power diode pumped solid state lasers chain for inertial fusion energy application. He has been a consultant for several public organisms or private organisms. He also is the main author or co-author of more than 150 publications in specialized revues of communications in international conferences. Up to now, he has managed 36 contracts with French public organisms or European organisms (ESA, CE) and industrial facilities.
